Step 2: Representing Numbers

Each column on the Abacus represents a place value (units, tens, hundreds, etc.). To represent a number:

• Move the lower beads up to represent 1, 2, 3, or 4.

• Move one upper bead down to represent 5.

Example: To represent the number 7:
